Help Us Honor a Sacred Life — Build a Well in Namibia
In memory of Bundu, Guardian of the Holy Fire, and in service of the village and people he protected for a lifetime.
Dear Friends,
As many of you know, Namibia has become sacred to me both in my inner life and in my outer work. It is one of the most intense, transformative, and glorious places on the earth, and its ancient Indigenous wisdom is still alive despite the difficulties of modern life. The four trips I have taken there have changed the lives of those who came, and continue to inspire me at the deepest level.
Meeting Gabriel
When I first went there 15 years ago, my guide was a wonderful, dignified, brilliant young man named Gabriel. We became immediate friends, and I was deeply impressed by his care and the depth of his natural spirituality. He told me his father, Bundu, was the guardian of the Holy Fire — the flame of love and wisdom at the heart of the Namibian understanding of God.
Meeting Bundu
On my second visit, I met Bundu, and that meeting changed my life. From the first moment, I knew he was that rarest of things — a realized being of the greatest humility and kindness. In his early 80s, he worked tirelessly to heal and inspire his people.
The Flame and the Request
Bundu left his body early last year. The Holy Fire, when a guardian dies, is extinguished for a year — it will be relit with the new guardian in February 2027, and I have been given the honor of attending on behalf of the whole Sacred Activist movement.
I asked Gabriel what we could do for Bundu's village in return for everything he gave me and every group I brought to him. He told me what the village desperately needed: a large well. I pledged to raise the $15,000 that would make it possible, along with a simple rock monument to honor Bundu.
